The Adventure of George the Rock

George the Rock
Liked his home,
With no t.v.
Or telephone.

He and his friends
Claimed outdoors as their stead,
The sky was their ceiling
The earth was their bed.

Others rushed by,
By paw and by foot.
George was quite happy
Just staying put.

Because George sat still
He would easily see
Dust left by fairies
On the wings of a bee.

And since George was quiet
He could tune in to hear
A lovebug’s soft whisper
In its sweetheart’s ear.

On his own,
George moved slow.
Worms would push him
To and fro.

Then a powerful wind
Scooped up George in its pocket,
And flung him so fast
George shot like a rocket

Over flowers and trees
All the places he knew.
He bid them goodbye,
That was all he could do.

Lights from the towns
Winked at George in the night.
He flew with the birds
And someone’s lost kite,

Over forests and lakes,
Over houses and stores,
Then the wind set George down
Near a cliff at the shore.

George had never
Been to this place,
But seeing another rock
He recognized its face.

You see rocks of today
Come from rocks from before,
As far back as the days
When there were dinosaurs.

Rocks are shaped by the weather
And smoothed by the tide,
Sometimes they change
When big rocks collide.

George knew in his heart
All rocks are related.
He and his new friends
Celebrated.

Time seemed to speed up
As they danced in formations,
Showing off grooves
That we call striations.

They flipped on their sides,
Those rocks sure could roll.
They jumped from great heights
And made really deep holes.

While the littler stones
Went looking for sticks
To play tic-tac-toe
And do other cool tricks.

Then rocks of all ages
Gathered round by the fire.
The party was fun
But ‘twas time to retire.

Under the stars
George slept like rocks do.
At least for the moment
His travels were through.

‘Neath the sun in the morning,
‘Midst the sea’s bric-a-brac,
George knew he’d be fine,
Though the wind might come back.

Cause you don’t always know
When adventures appear.
And you can’t control
Which way the winds steer.
